On 07/17/14, Detectives from the Barstow Police Department Street Enforcement Team (SET), Agents from the Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control and Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department conducted an alcohol sales compliance operation in the City of Barstow. The operation was to ensure that employees and store owners that engage in the selling of alcoholic beverages were in compliance with state laws regarding the sales of alcoholic beverages.
Employees are required by law to verify that consumers being sold alcoholic beverages are at least 21 years of age. This should be accomplished by requesting and verifying the valid identification of any consumer who appears to be under the age of 21, to ensure they meet the age requirement to purchase alcoholic beverages. The operation consisted of volunteer adults under the age of 21 years, entering various businesses where they attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages. During the operation a volunteer entered a business within the City of Barstow and attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages.
As a result of the operation sixteen (16) businesses were visited, three (3) of which failed compliance and sold alcoholic beverages to the volunteers who are between the age of 18 and 20 years old.
The businesses that were found to be out of compliance were issued citations and are subject to sanctions against their alcoholic beverage sales license by the Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control.
Ana Gallardo, an employee at one of the businesses found out of compliance, was arrested after she attempted to elude prosecution by providing a false name to officers. Gallardo was found to be on probation for an unrelated charge and she was booked at the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow.
