SUMMARY:

On September 15, 2014 at approximately 1:26 p.m., the Barstow Police Department received information from a Barstow Unified School District employee at Crestline Elementary School regarding a nine (9) year old male student having a suspicious injury to his abdomen. The school employee told the officer that the male juvenile was a student at the elementary school.

Officer Edwards went to Crestline Elementary School and made contact with the school district employee and the nine (9) year old male student. Officer Edwards observed injuries to the child, which were red, raised and appeared to have bled recently.

During Officer Edward’s investigation, it was discovered that the nine (9) year old male student had a six (6) year old sister, who also attended Crestline Elementary School. Both students were interviewed by Officer Edwards. During the interviews both children alleged to have been physically abused by their biological mother, Kayla Schick on Saturday, September 13, 2014, while in their home in Barstow. The children alleged Schick struck both of them with a cellular telephone charging cord. Both children had visible injuries, which were consistent with their statements. The children were released to the San Bernardino County Department of Children Services.

Officer Edwards attempted to contact Schick at her residence, but initially was unable to locate her. Schick was later located and came to the Barstow Police Department where she was interviewed in reference to the alleged abuse.  As a result of statements made by Schick and the injuries to the children, Schick was arrested for felony child abuse. Schick was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow.

The investigation is on-going and anyone with information is asked to call Officer David Edwards at the Barstow Police Department at (760)256-2211 or those wishing to remain anonymous may call We-Tip at (800)78-CRIME.
