VICTIM: City of Barstow
LOCATION: Former Barstow Community Hospital Building
555 S. Seventh Street, Barstow, CA
CASE AGENT: Officer Terry Sidur, ID# P-67
On Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at approximately 10:36 p.m. the Barstow Police Department Dispatch Center received a call from the security guard at the former Barstow Community Hospital reporting a vehicle parked in the parking lot of the location and an open door at the property. The vehicle was described as a dark colored Ford Thunderbird.
The security guard reported seeing lights on inside the building that are normally not on and window coverings closed that are normally not closed. Officers arrived at the location and with the assistance of Corporal Andrew Ellis and his police service dog, Duco, an interior search of the building was conducted.
Officers discovered several fluorescent light bulbs broken, fire extinguishers discharged, and additional vandalism to the interior of the building, although no one was found inside the building. Officers documented the incident, checked the vehicle, and left the location.
On this same date at approximately 11:58 p.m., the security guard again called the police department to report finding a subject on the former hospital property. The security guard detained the subject until officers returned and took custody of the subject, who was identified as Christopher Crawford.
The vehicle at the location was registered to Crawford and additional investigation revealed evidence both on Crawford’s person and within the building that linked him to the break-in and the damage caused to the interior of the building. Officers were also able to determine that Crawford had fled from the area prior to the initial response by officers and was returning to retrieve his vehicle when he was detained by security.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Officer Terry Sidur at the Barstow Police Department at (760)256-2211. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous may call We-Tip at 1(800)78-CRIME.
