On Friday, October 24, 2014 at approximately 10:42 p.m. the Barstow Police and Fire Dispatch Center received a telephone call from the victim who reported a subject had stolen a backpack from his semi-truck while it was parked in the 300 block of East Main Street in the City of Barstow.
The victim told officers that he had just met the subject while he was parked at the location taking his mandatory commercial drivers rest period. The victim said he allowed the subject inside his truck and while inside the truck, the subject took his backpack and fled from the area. The victim said he chased the subject to an area at Barstow Rd. and Main Street, but was unable to catch the subject who continued running west on Main Street from Barstow Rd. The victim reported there was a handgun inside the backpack, as well as additional personal items.
The victim gave a description of the suspect to officers who began checking the area for the suspect and the stolen property. The description of the suspect provided by the victim matched a subject that Officer Perez recognized. Officer Perez prepared a photo line-up including a picture of the possible suspect, which the victim positively identified as the subject that stole his property. The suspect’s identity was then radioed to additional units who began searching for the suspect. The potential suspect was identified as Albert Mendoza.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. Officer Philip Ragle located Mendoza in the 300 block of East Fredricks Street and detained him for investigation of the theft. After additional investigation, Mendoza was arrested for the theft. During questioning, Mendoza admitted to the theft and led officers to a location in the 100 block of West Fredricks Street where officers were able to recover items taken from the victim, including the stolen handgun and ammunition.
Mendoza was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Jail for the listed charges. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call Officer Rudy Perez at the Barstow Police Department at (760)256-2211.
