CASE AGENT(S):               Officer Terry Sidur, ID# P-67

On Monday, October 20, 2014, at approximately 3:43 p.m., The Barstow Police and Fire Dispatch Center received a call from a citizen in the 500 block of Muriel Drive in the City of Barstow reporting that they had found what appeared to be a hand grenade in their front yard.

The resident reported that he was doing yard work in the front yard of the residence when he found what he believed to be a live hand grenade. Officers responded to the location and also observed the device, which they also believed to be a live military hand grenade.

Officers photographed the device and contacted the Explosive Ordinance Division of the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin. The E.O.D. was unable to determine if the ordinance was live or inert from the photograph and members of the E.O.D. responded to the scene.

The U.S. Army E.O.D. unit took possession of the device and transported it back to Fort Irwin for disposal.

It is unknown how long the device had been in the yard or where the device came from. All citizens are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency if they spot suspicious or unusual looking objects that they are unsure where they came from or who they belong to.

Anyone with further information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Barstow Police Department at (760)256-2211. Anyone with information who wishes to remain anonymous can contact We-Tip at 1(800)78-CRIME or at
