SUMMARY:

On Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at approximately 11:51 p.m., the Barstow Police Department Dispatch Center received several calls reporting “shots fired” in the 1400 block of DeAnza St. in Barstow.  Investigation revealed that several bullets struck the residence. The crime scene was processed and several items of evidence were found at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a 20 year old female, lived at the residence with her new boyfriend.  Investigation revealed that the victim recently broke up with her former boyfriend, Justin Bowles, 22 years old.  The victim reported that while she was at Bowles’ residence on Highland Avenue in Barstow a few days before the shooting, Lewis Bowles, 52 years old, Justin’s father, punched her in the face knocking her to the ground. The victim reported that Lewis and Justin Bowles assaulted her while she was on the ground. She also reported that Justin Bowles put a handgun to her head and threatened to kill her. The victim was able to escape from the residence.

On Friday, August 01, 2014, Barstow Police Department Detectives and Officers served a search warrant at Bowles’ residence on Highland Avenue in Barstow. The Officers found numerous items of evidence and firearms in Justin Bowles’ room and inside the residence. Neither Justin nor Lewis Bowles was at the residence at the time the search warrant was executed.

Evidence located at the shooting scene and evidence found in Bowles’ residence was sent to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Crime Lab for analysis and comparison.

On Wednesday, December 03, 2014, the Barstow Police Department received a report from the crime lab stating that evidence found at the shooting scene “matched” evidence found in Justin Bowles’ bedroom.

On Wednesday, December 03, 2014, Barstow Police Detectives and Officers located Lewis Bowles on Flora Street in Barstow and took him into custody without incident. Justin Bowles was located at Barstow Community College a short time later and taken into custody without incident.

Justin Bowles was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Barstow Jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, spousal abuse, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling.

Lewis Bowles was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Barstow Jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Further Investigation is being conducted and the handgun used in the shooting has not been recovered.   Anyone having information on the shooting and the location of the handgun used in the shooting is asked to call the Barstow Police Department Detective Division at (760)255-5181 or Barstow Police Dispatch Center at (760)256-2211.
