SUMMARY:

On November 29, 2014 at approximately 9:16 a.m., the Barstow Police Department received a call for service at The Home Depot store in the 1100 Block of Avenue “L” in the City of Barstow regarding a theft by an employee. Corporal Gilmore arrived and learned that the employee, identified as Nelly Hernandez, was being detained by the store’s loss prevention agent. The loss prevention agent determined that Nelly Hernandez had been involved in three (3) separate thefts from the business while she was on-duty.

Nelly Hernandez who had been employed at Home Depot for approximately one year was a cashier at the store. During the past month Hernandez directed her husband, later identified as Hugo Hernandez, to come to the store and select items she wanted and place them in a shopping cart. Hernandez’s husband then took the shopping cart to Hernandez’s assigned cash register to make it appear that he was completing the transaction. Once at the register Hernandez manipulated the transaction altering the final balance due to show a single item. Hernandez’s husband then made payment for the single item and left the store with all of the items in the shopping cart. The incident was captured on the store video surveillance camera.

During Corporal Gilmore’s interview with Nelly Hernandez, she admitted to planning the thefts and using her husband to execute her plan. Nelly Hernandez also told Corporal Gilmore that the stolen items were currently at her residence. Nelly Hernandez was then arrested at the store and transported to the Barstow Police Department.

Officers from the Barstow Police Department Patrol Division and Corporal Gilmore then went to the Hernandez’s residence and recovered most of the stolen items.

Nelly Hernandez was booked at the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow for the above listed charges. Hugo Hernandez was not arrested at this time, although a report will be sent to the District Attorney’s office requesting charges be filed against Hugo Hernandez for his involvement in the thefts.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Corporal Jarell Gilmore at the Barstow Police Department Detective Division at (760)255-5160. Those wishing to remain anonymous may also report criminal activity by calling the WE-Tip hotline at 1(800)78-CRIME.
