On March 21, 2016, at approximately 6:44 P.M., Barstow Police Officer Mathew Helms was patrolling the area of Buena Vista Street when he heard several gunshots come from the area of May Street and Fredricks Street. Officer Helms broadcasted the information to Barstow Police Dispatch and immediately responded to the area of the gunshots.
As officers arrived in the area they located evidence of a shooting incident. Officers located several fired cartridge casings in the street. The crime scene was secured and Detective Andrew Reyes and Evidence Technician Sabrina Ellis responded to the scene.
A crime scene investigation was conducted and evidence related to the shooting was collected.
The investigation revealed that the victim was returning from a nearby convenience store when his vehicle was stopped in the street by an unknown black male adult. The male blocked the path of the victim’s vehicle and began yelling at the victim.
The victim observed the male pull a handgun from his waist band area. As he observed this the victim immediately accelerated his vehicle to get out of the area. The unknown male then fired several rounds at the victim as the victim sped away. The victim’s vehicle was struck by one of the rounds.
Evidence Technician Ellis processed the victim’s vehicle and collected evidence related to the shooting.
Witnesses described the shooting suspect as a Black male adult, approximately 25-30 years old, 5’11 to 6’0 in height, and having a medium build.
Barstow Police Officers conducted a search for the shooting suspect but met with negative results.
