On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Barstow Police Officer Juan Zepeda was dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of Paloma Street to check for a subject, Kenneth Ray Hawkins, who was reported missing on Friday, May 13, 2016. Officer Zepeda arrived at the home and made contact with a resident of the house, Maurice King, who stated Hawkins was not home. Officer Zepeda checked around the residence and located the body of what appeared to be a deceased black male adult in the residence. This subject was later identified as Kenneth Ray Hawkins.
Officer Zepeda detained King and called for additional assistance. Barstow Police Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The Detectives located signs of foul play. Detectives spoke to multiple witnesses both at the scene and in the area.
A crime scene investigation was conducted and revealed that Hawkin’s sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Evidence linking King to the shooting was located at the scene.
King was arrested and transported to the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto where he was booked for P.C. 187 (a) - Murder.
A Deputy Coroner from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner Division responded to the scene and took possession of Hawkins’ body.
