On September 26, 2016, Officer Matthew Helms was dispatched to the Barstow Police Department lobby regarding a theft of firearms report that occurred in the 1800 block of Forane Street. Officer Helms’ investigation revealed that a shotgun and a .25 caliber handgun were stolen from the victim’s residence. The victim reported prior to the theft that he had two relatives at his home and suspected one of them may have stolen his firearms. One of the possible suspects was a 17-year-old juvenile. The investigation was turned over to Detective Andrew Reyes for further investigation. 


While investigating this case, Detective Reyes’ learned that on October 19, 2016, an assault with a firearm occurred in the 1700 block of Paloma Street. Officers contacted the victim, Brian Essex, who reported the suspect, Arnold Navarro, came to his residence and began causing a disturbance. When Essex contacted Navarro, Navarro pointed a shotgun at him and threatened him.  Essex is a friend of victim, Ramirez Sr., and believed the shotgun that was pointed at him belonged to Ramirez Sr.


Detective Reyes conducted further investigation into the assault case and obtained a search warrant for Arnold Navarro’s residence. 


On October 26, 2016 Barstow Police Officers and Detectives served the search warrant at the residence of Arnold Navarro. During the search of Navarro’s residence, the stolen shotgun and .25 caliber pistol were located inside of Navarro’s bedroom. 


Through his investigation, Detective Reyes was able to determine that the 17-year-old juvenile was responsible for the theft of the firearms.  After stealing the firearms, the 17-year-old juvenile sold them to Arnold Navarro. 


The 17-year-old juvenile was arrested and booked at the High Desert Juvenile Detention Center in Apple Valley, California, for the theft of the firearms.


Arnold Navarro was arrested and booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, California for PC 245(a)(2)- Assault with a Firearm.
