On December 6, 2016, at approximately 10:06 P.M., Barstow Police Dispatch center received a call regarding a shooting that had occurred in the 300 block of Date Street. Officers responded to the shooting scene and learned that the victim was employed by a legitimate vehicle repossessing company and drove to the location to repossess a Nissan Sentra. While attempting to repossess the vehicle the owner of the vehicle, later identified as John Utley, emerged from his residence with a handgun. The victim reported that Utley began shooting at the employees from the repossession company.
Utley fired several rounds from a handgun and struck the vehicle that was being repossessed. One of the employees from the repossession company was in the vehicle at the time the vehicle was struck by a bullet. The responding officers found evidence of the shooting and secured the scene.
Detective Leo Griego was called out and assumed the investigation. During his investigation Detective Griego conducted an in-field show-up and the victim positively identified John Utley as the shooter. Detective Griego was able to locate and seize the handgun used in the shooting.
John Utley was arrested and booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Jail in Barstow, California for the above listed charge.
On December 7, 2016 Barstow Police Department Evidence Technician Sabrina Ellis processed the Nissan Sentra that was struck during the incident and was able to collect additional evidence related to the shooting investigation.
