On Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at about 8:28 a.m., Officer Silva responded to a call for service regarding a report of an automobile theft at B.E.S.T. Opportunities, located at 120 Cal Avenue in the City of Barstow.
Officer Silva arrived on scene and learned that when the B.E.S.T. Opportunities employees arrived to work they found that one of their fifteen passenger vans was missing from their lot. Officer Silva reviewed the businesses surveillance video and observed the theft. Officer Silva saw a male subject approach the van, gain entry, and drive away in it. As Officer Silva reviewed the video, he recognized the male subject from prior police contacts and positively identified him as Gabriel Tafoya.
Officer Silva broadcasted the suspect and vehicle information to the officers and began searching for the stolen vehicle.
At approximately 11:02 a.m., Officer Silva located the stolen vehicle parked, unoccupied, behind Vons, located at 1270 East Main Street in the City of Barstow. Officers searched the surrounding area for Tafoya but did not locate him.
Barstow Police Department Evidence Technicians processed the vehicle for evidence and Officer Silva released the vehicle to an employee of B.E.S.T. Opportunities.
At approximately 3:00 p.m., Sergeant Bledsoe observed Gabriel Tafoya walking on the 200 block of East Main Street. Sergeant Bledsoe stopped Tafoya and placed him under arrest for VC 10851(a). During the contact with Tafoya Sergeant Bledsoe obtained additional evidence linking him to the stolen vehicle.
Gabriel Tafoya was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department High Desert Detention Center Jail in Adelanto, CA. for VC 10851(a) – Automobile Theft.
