On March 3, 2017, at approximately 2:52 PM, a 15-year-old juvenile reported to a school official at Barstow High School that she was the victim of a sexual assault approximately one year ago. The school official immediately notified the School Resource Officer of the allegation.
School Resource Officer Montoria Franklin interviewed the victim and she reported that in January 2016, her mother’s boyfriend, Juan Carlos Pineda sexually assaulted her. The victim reported that her mother was not home when the assault took place. The victim said the suspect lived at her residence with her mother for several years and that the sexual abuse occurred within the last year.
The Barstow Police Department’s Detective Division assumed the investigation and Detective Leo Griego began investigating the incident. Detective Griego’ investigation revealed further evidence corroborating the victim’s statement. Detective Griego also showed the victim a photographic line-up and she positively identified Juan Carlos Pineda as the suspect.
On March 6, 2017, Detective Griego spoke with Pineda at the Detective Division and conducted an interview with him regarding this investigation. After the interview, Detective Griego placed Pineda under arrest. Pineda was booked at the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow for the listed charges.
