CASE AGENT:                                Detective Leo Griego

On Monday, August 21, 2017, at approximately 1:12 p.m., the Barstow Police Department received a call from a Barstow citizen reporting a stabbing in the 1200 block of East Main Street. Several Barstow PD Officers responded to the scene and located the stabbing victim, identified as Oscar Ibanez, inside the business suffering from several stab wounds to the front of his body.  Barstow Fire District Paramedics responded to the scene and administered first aid to Ibanez.  Ibanez was also treated and released from the Barstow Community Hospital. Ibanez and his girlfriend told the officers that while they were behind a “dumpster enclosure” in front of the Cutting Edge Beauty Salon, a subject named Mario approached them and began accusing Ibanez of stealing a speaker from him.

Ibanez and his girlfriend told the officers that Mario stabbed Ibanez on his chest with a razor type pocketknife and took his backpack containing his personal property and $40.00 cash. The witnesses provided a description of Mario and reported that he fled the scene on foot toward the Desert Inn Motel.

Officers responded to the Desert Inn Motel and located a subject named Mario Sanchez in one of the rooms.  The Officers detained Mario Sanchez and conducted an in-field show-up with the stabbing victim.  Ibanez positively identified Mario Sanchez as the male who stabbed him.  The victim’s girlfriend and a witness also participated in separate in-field show-ups and positively identified Mario Sanchez as the stabbing suspect.

Barstow Police Department Evidence Technicians responded to the area and processed the scene where the stabbing took place.

Mario Sanchez was booked at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Barstow Jail for PC 664/187(a) - Attempted Murder and PC 211 - Robbery.
