DATE OF PRESS RELEASE: November 7, 2017
SUSPECT: 48-Year-Old, WMA, Barstow Resident
CASE AGENT: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department
On Monday, November 6, 2017, at approximately 4:48 p.m., members of the Barstow Police Detective Division were searching for a male suspect wanted for probation violation. The investigators located the male subject sitting in a vehicle in the 300 block of Palm Avenue in the City of Barstow. As the investigators approached the suspect to contact him, he quickly drove away from the area.
The detective followed the suspect and observed that he was driving a dark colored Ford Expedition with a trailer attached. The detective attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle by activating his unit’s red lights and siren. The suspect failed to yield to the detective and fled at a high rate of speed. Additional Barstow Police Department Officers responded to the area and a marked police vehicle pursued the vehicle. As the suspect attempted to evade officers, he continued to drive at a high rate of speed through residential areas and ran several stop signs and traffic lights.
The suspect travelled to the 800 block of East Fredricks Street and drove into the front yard of a residence colliding with a chain link fence and striking a portion of the garage. The suspect exited the vehicle and ran to the front door as the officers pursued the suspect on foot. As the officers approached the suspect, he produced a handgun and turned towards the officers. One of the officers fired one round at the suspect striking him.
Barstow Police Officers performed CPR on the suspect and called paramedics to the scene. Barstow Fire Protection District paramedics arrived on scene and performed emergency medical aid on the suspect, however he was pronounced deceased.
Barstow Police Officers secured the scene and notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail per Barstow Police Department policy. A homicide team responded to Barstow to conduct the investigation.
