SUMMARY:

On December 5, 2017, at approximately 5:55 P.M., Barstow Police Dispatch received a call regarding a traffic Collison in the 700 block of Rimrock Road.  The caller reported that the involved vehicle was on fire.

Officer Allen arrived at the location and observed the vehicle in a residence in the 1300 block of Mirage Drive. Both the vehicle and residence were on fire. Officer Allen attempted to locate the driver in the vehicle but the fire was to powerful. Barstow Fire Protection District responded to the scene and extinguished the fire to the vehicle and the residence.

Officers learned that the involved vehicle, a 2003 Buick SUV, was eastbound on Rimrock Road when it suddenly veered northbound crossing the opposing lanes of traffic. The vehicle travelled along the north sidewalk in the 700 block of Rimrock Road colliding with a chain link fence and then proceeding through a wood fence surrounding the residence in the 1300 block Mirage Drive. The vehicle continued through the fence and collided with the residence.

The vehicle crashed through the exterior wall of the residence and came to rest inside the home. The vehicle then caught on fire and the fire spread to the residence engulfing the home in flames.

Officers learned that at the time the home caught on fire one person was in the residence. That person was able to exit the home without injury.

Once firefighters from the Barstow Fire Protection District extinguished the fire they located the driver in the vehicle. The driver succumbed to the fire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Barstow Police Department Evidence Technicians responded to the incident to process the scene. A Deputy from the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Department responded to the accident scene. The deputy identified the driver of the vehicle as Calvin Fields, a resident of Barstow.

The cause of this traffic collision is still under investigation.
