On 01-06-17 at approximately 9:22 P.M., Officers were dispatched to Barstow Community Hospital regarding a gunshot victim. The reporting party told officers that Timothy Pettiway arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his left hand and reported he shot himself.
Officer Buesa arrived at Barstow Community Hospital and made contact with Pettiway. As a result, Officer Buesa learned that Pettiway was at his girlfriend’s residence in the 500 Block of South Muriel Drive, cleaning a firearm. While cleaning the firearm Pettiway shot himself in the left hand causing minor injuries. Pettiway then hid the firearm inside the residence and went to the hospital. Pettiway provided a description of the firearm to the officers.
Officer Buesa went to the residence and located the scene of the incident. Officers checked the residence and located a 9mm handgun. Barstow Police Detectives arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation. Officers collected the firearm and booked it into evidence at the Barstow Police Department.
Detective Arias conducted further investigation and confirmed that Pettiway is a convicted felon, and prohibited from possessing any firearms.
After Barstow Community Hospital medical staff treated and released Pettiway for his injuries, Detective Arias placed him under arrest and transported him to the Barstow Police Department.
Pettiway was subsequently booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto for Penal Code 29800(a) (1) - Felon in possession of a firearm.
