On Friday, January 26, 2018, at approximately 7:46 P.M., Officer Helms was on patrol in the 1600 Block of Sunset Street when he saw a black Dodge SUV with illegally tinted windows. Officer Helms conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and contacted the occupants. Officer Helms identified the driver as Jamal Taylor and the passenger as Peter Clayton.
Officer Helms conducted a driver’s license check of Taylor and learned that he was unlicensed. Officer Helms also recognized Taylor as a subject he was looking for regarding a weapons violation investigation. Through his investigation, Officer Helms learned that Taylor was in illegal possession of a Ruger .22 caliber rifle. Officer Helms questioned Taylor about the firearm and Taylor told him that he had the firearm in his bedroom at his residence in the 700 Block of Higgins Road.
Officer Helms conducted a criminal history check of Taylor and confirmed that Taylor is a felon prohibiting him from possessing any firearms. Officer Helms also conducted a records check on Peter Clayton and learned that he had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest. Officer Helms placed Clayton under arrest at the scene.
Officer Helms then responded to Taylor’s residence, with Taylor, and retrieved the Ruger .22 caliber rifle from Taylor’s bedroom closet. Officers photographed the firearm and collected it as evidence.
Officers transported Taylor and Clayton to the Barstow Police Department for further processing.
Taylor was subsequently booked at the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow for Penal Code 29800 (a) (1) - Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Clayton was subsequently booked at the San Bernardino County Jail in Barstow for his outstanding felony warrant for PC 273.5 – Domestic Violence.
