SUSPECTS: Isaiah Velasquez-Traylor, HMA, 18-Year-Old, Barstow Resident
VICTIMS: Barstow Unified School District
CASE AGENT Detective Leo Griego
On February 13, 2018, at approximately 6:50 PM, Barstow High School Principal Derrick Delton notified the police department that a Barstow High School student might have possibly made comments about “shooting up” the school on February 14, 2018. The concern of a shooting possibly occurring at the high school quickly spread on social media when an anonymous Snapchat post warned students to stay home from school.
Barstow Police officers and detectives investigated the incident and conducted multiple interviews with students and parents. As a result, the investigation revealed that the threats of a shooting were not credible.
On February 14, 2018, at approximately 6:45 AM, several Barstow Police officers, working together with Barstow High School employees, conducted security checks and classroom checks of the Barstow High School campus to ensure the safety of all the students.
On February 14, 2018, at approximately 9:34 AM, the Barstow Police became aware of an additional threat of a shooting made by a high school student via the social networking service Twitter. Sergeant Adam Cortinas and Detective Leo Griego investigated the incident and identified the student as Isaiah Velasquez-Traylor.
The detectives were able to obtain evidence detailing the threat made by the student. During his postings, Velasquez-Traylor threatened to shoot up the school on February 15, 2018.
The investigation also revealed that the student is a Barstow Unified School District student, however; he is currently on independent study.
The detectives located Velasquez-Traylor in the1700 block of Young Street. They contacted him and conducted a search of his residence and vehicle. The detectives did not locate any firearms other than a replica BB gun. Although Velasquez-Traylor made the threatening statement, the investigation revealed that he did not have a detailed plan to carry it out.
Detective Griego placed Velasquez-Traylor under arrest and booked him at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Barstow Jail for the listed charges.
