In 2013 the City of  Barstow Fire Protection District applied for applicants status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). The Department goal is accreditation by the year 2017.

The Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) is dedicated to assisting fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self assessment and accreditation, in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities. CFAI accreditation is the prestigious award granted to fire service agencies that successfully complete a rigorous peer and self-assessment process. The accreditation award confirms that the services the Barstow Fire Department provides are among the best in the world. This process validates the department's performance, offering assurances to the community that the Barstow Fire Department is a cost efficient and effective organization.
