Be Counted Barstow. . .It’s in Our Hands!

Be Counted Barstow. . .It’s in Our Hands! (4/1/2009)

During the last census in 2000, the Barstow area had the lowest percentage of returned census questionnaires in San Bernardino County at only 58 percent (county average was 70 percent).

What is the Census?

  • The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years.
  • The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
  • The next census is in 2010.
  • Your participation in the census is required by law.
  • It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
  • Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census.
  • Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.

Barstow-area concerned community leaders from the schools, churches, media, government, social services and other orgnaizations have put together a Complete Count Committee to ensure everyone in the Barstow area is counted this time around on the Census 2010 (Census Day is April 1, 2010).

For more information on this committee, contact Jeanette Hayhurst (co-chair with Carmen Hernandez) at the City of Barstow, 760-255-5102. For more information on Census 2010, go to the 2010 Census web site.
