Barstow, Ca. – The Barstow City Council unanimously approved the City’s Fiscal Year 19/20 Operating Budget at Monday evening’s Council Meeting on June 17th.
“I am proud to present my first budget as City Manager,” stated City Manager Nikki Salas. “I would like to take a moment to thank the diligent and hardworking staff that helped to prepare this budget which represents my vision of a conservative spending plan for the general fund.”
City Manager Salas also stated during the presentation that the funding plan for Measure Q was in direct response to the community’s call to action to increase a public safety presence throughout the city with both the Police and Fire Departments.
“We were given guidelines by the City Manager to develop a responsible conservative budget that was balanced for the community,” stated Assistant City Manager Cindy Prothro.
The presentation outlined spending for the general fund, the Barstow Fire Protection District, Waste Water, Solid Waste and Measure Q. Revenues and expenditures were presented in detail to showcase a transparent budget to the community that emphasized the priority of a balanced fund.
Community based youth and senior programs will receive in excess of $200k as outlined in the Measure Q spending priorities budget.
An emphasis on economic development was outlined during the Measure Q portion of the presentation where City Manager Salas emphasized that the individual’s role as Economic Development Administrator would be more of a salesperson and face of marketing for the city.
“I want to compliment the City Manager on presenting a balanced budget,” stated Councilman Rich Harpole. “This is the first time in 4 years that we haven’t overestimated our revenues…I appreciate your conservative approach.”
