City of Barstow Announces New City Manager, Ms. Nikki Salas

Barstow, CA – After an extensive recruitment and interviewing process, the City of Barstow has selected its top candidate – Ms. Nikki Salas – to serve the community as its new City Manager, Ms. Salas’ appointment and employment are scheduled for approval at the regular City Council meeting of March 18, 2019.  With the help of (sic) professional recruiter, Andrew Gorgey, from the firm o fPeckham & McKenney, the City Council had a field of 73 applicants to choose from.  Ms. Salas rose to the top after extensive interviews with both the City Council and a separate community-member panel, including former Mayor Lawrence Dale, Treasurer Michael Lewis, Eva Bagg, PhD., Watson Hammond, Jr. and Mike Hernandez.  After interviewing the top candidates for the position, both panels unanimously agreed that Ms. Salas was the perfect fit for the Barstow Community.  The City Council unanimously selected Nikki Salas, who will assume the post effective April 1, 2019.  Ms. Salas, who has a doctorate in Organizational Leadership, has nearly 20 years of experience in City Services, including human resources and information technology and recently serving as the Assistant Town Manager of Apple Valley from 2016 to 2018.  This was an extremely competitive field, and Nikki emerged as the top candidate over several other experienced managers.  Her sustained effort at professional development, including two advanced degrees, her work ethic, and her intense commitment to the high desert and to Barstow’s issues won the day.  Nikki has outstanding qualifications and references from all past employers.  With deep roots in the high desert, Nikki has been on a City Manager “track” in her professional career for several years, and has never lost sight of her professional goal to one day lead Barstow as its City Manager.

Nikki intends to fully engage with the community and make Barstow her home.  “I am excited to return to the high desert and so proud to have been selected to help take the City of Barstow to the next level of excellence in services to the community.”

Mayor Julie Hackbarth-McIntyre, on behalf of he entire City Council stated, “I am very excited about the hiring of Nikki Salas.  She brings to our city the optimum combination of positive energy, education, experience, and leadership qualities.  She is going to be a wonderful asset to our community in Barstow.”
