Training Local Talent for BIG Opportunities

Barstow has always been a railroad town, and Barstow Community College is helping make sure it stays that way for generations to come. During a recent community presentation, Dr. Eva Bagg, President of Barstow Community College, shared how the college is preparing local students for the career opportunities coming with the Barstow International Gateway (BIG).

Here are a few ways they’re getting ready:
Welding training: Since 2018, the college has partnered with BNSF to create a custom welding program. They turned an old fitness lab into a shop with 21 welding booths supplied by BNSF and have already helped students earn certifications to start their careers.

Modern tech programs: The college has added training in supply chain automation and launched a new FAA-certified drone program, which will support BIG’s future operations.

Mechanical and electrical skills: They’re developing equipment maintenance and repair certifications and now offer the Veterans Electrical Program, which helps service members transition to high-demand union apprenticeships.

Industry expertise: New instructors with hands-on experience, including a retired BNSF employee, are helping students build skills that will directly apply to jobs at BIG.
